It's like my friend Eric. We were introduced by a mutual friend. At the time, Eric's company was the market leader in his niche industry. He wanted to increase his revenues by expanding his market. We had five coaching meetings to determine what extended markets might be considered. Over our conversations, he arrived at numerous ideas for expansion. Some were a natural progression and some were in highly competitive markets. Others required significant additions to his product lines and would be quite costly.
We finally agreed on the opportunities that most paralleled his current business using current products, products needing minor adjustments and with a nominal cost increase. We also focused on breaking into several of the more competitive markets without exorbitant costs.
Then, Eric asked me to put on my consulting hat and create a strategic plan based on our conversations. The plan needed to include some competitive analysis and continued leadership coaching. It also needed to inspire the sales team. It included creative step-by-step actions, as well.
The result: the company is still the market leader in its niche, but has gained market share in three parallel markets based on the strategic plan, additional leadership and motivated team work. Revenues have increased, even through shakey economic times!
